What do we use at the Cyber Café @ Malden Square?

In 2006, we added speaker extension cords so patrons can connect headphones from the front. We are now installing USB extension cords for similar use.

No more reaching down to the floor and behind the computers to plug in your headphones or USB devices!

Computer station, PC, monitor, & keyboard

Most of our PCs are Dell Optiplex GX models, as shown on the right. They are Pentium III class systems (766 and 800 Mhz) and have a minimum of 256 MG RAM, CD-ROM and floppy drives, and rear speaker and USB ports.

We also have several pieces of adaptive hardware that users may want to use, depending on their needs. These include large print keyboards, touchpads (instead of mouse), and trackballs with an extra large ball.

This photo on the right shows how crowded we were in our former site. We have more room in our new space so the keyboards fit on the counter space in front of the monitors.

We also have a much larger Training Room, so we’ll add more computers there as we get them. We will remain at 9-10 patron computers in the Main Access Room.

Other Equipment

An HP high-speed laser printer and high speed Internet access completes our basic setup of what is available for patrons. We are experimenting with several donated scanners, but they’ve been unreliable. As we improve our media equipment, we hope to add scanning, faxing, CD-writing and related services. These will carry a modest fee to recover costs and help improve the Cyber Café’s financial stability.

”Wish List” Equipment

Other equipment we’d like to add:

  • Multifunction color inkjet or laser printer to provide fax, scan, print, and photocopy services.
  • Flatbed color scanner that works with Windows XP and/or VISTA.
  • Updated PCs (bulk of 10 or more with similar configuration) -- P4s with 512 MG RAM or better.
  • Flatscreen monitors: 17” or larger is preferred but some 15” may be accepted.

Please call the Cyber Café donation line (toll free: 866-833-2823) to confirm our needs before you try to drop off any donations. This phone is not monitored; please leave a message and we’ll call you back.
